Nix Pix for Dec 06

Here's a great mix of stuff that i put together with the holidays in mind, which for me means traveling tons, bundling up and spending time with people i haven't seen in a long time. Family, old friends, friendships rekindled and sitting by a real fire while chowing down on biscotti and random holiday goodness. Here, I've included some indie shizz with an occasional twist, enough to keep it real for the holiday season. It's unlike my usual electronic.hiphop mix and so I love this mixtape, and hope you do too.

And So It's Fall.

The air is crisp. Certain sports are in season. I always look forward to the new fall releases as I get ready to slow down and get my fall on - and this year there are a'plenty. For starters check out Darkel, the solo project from AIR member Jen-Benoit Dunkel. The soothing atmospherics of AIR are noticeably present and while the production isn't as unique, it makes for a great listen. Other relaxing picks for fall include the new Album Leaf which I can't seem to get enough of and The Rapture's long-awaited sophmoric release.

Check out the radio player on the music page (see link to the right). A few of my favorite releases are here including the new Charlotte Gainesbourg, The Kooks, and others. Many more to come....

Friday, September 9 in LA

I've been to PASH once and had a good time. The jocks spin good rock from the mid to late '70's - super obscure stuff on vinyl. Normally I'd post a one-off for Friday but tonight there's not much going on. I'm attending a birthday party in Los Feliz and am getting my game together for Bocce ball finals tomorrow afternoon. More to come for Saturday night.

NeoPlural
Choosing works of art that represent the wild diversity of Bay Area
art would require more than any single gallery show could hope to offer.
Keeping this in mind the artists presented work in different media and in
no single trajectory but share a profound commitment to their
individual aesthetic.

Bay Area social infrastructures lend themselves to forms of
cultural concentration that do not encourage insulation. Such networks
of relationships influence multifaceted works that run the gamut from
back-yard dioramas to technology-driven appropriations, and not to
forget eastern-flavored metaphors.

Neo-Plural welcomes the greater L.A. metropolitan area to sample some of
the
diversity of contemporary Bay Area art.

tonight

This is a great opportunity to check out Turntablelab on Fairfax if you haven't already. I was there last weekend and picked up some ill mixtapes (in CD format, natch). The after party is at Monroes in Beverly Hills. I've never been to a good party there, the crowd has always been a wierd mix of people. Who knows - if they pack it in tonight it could be a good time.

sunday funday (where are you)

So here's two situations. You decide which one is better.

A. Walking 6 blocks in Beverly Hills explaining the different types and styles of tanning beds while stepping over dogs wearing diamond collars but you're the bitch who complains about almost spilling your iced mocha (PS it's still freezing outside). And why is Versace's line so boorish this season?

B. Discussing over brunch how great it is to bump into friends unxepectedly on the street, then collectively slinking behind your menus as you recognize a busboy who everyone "forgot" to bail out of jail and had laughed at him for getting there in the first place.

C. I don't even want to get into the part about the mechanical bull, UCONN game, and bottomless mimosas. we'll save that for another time.

This was my Sunday (I love ya, J.O.).

I went to the last listening party held at the MOCA and it was insanely fun. Granted, the party was for Sigor Ros so no one cared about the musical pairing of icelandic sleep-rock with miniature sofis, but what can you do. art, music, booze, art = good times all around (minus the debut of alcoholic drinks by...Starbucks?? if anything is deserving of a huge "WTF" it's that).

blue house and beyond

So here's what I know. These things are in - bamboo, books (reading books not just collecting and stacking them in interesting ways), ecoblogs, tiny pieces of art, paid help while you spend your time soul searching (and on that note) meaning, finding simple solutions (and in that vein) shiny lip-plumping products. Everything is digital, just accept it. Google yourself to see how you're doing. The world is a magical place full of infinite wisdom, and Carls Jr. really IS a guilty pleasure no matter how you slice it.

el chavo, tiki bar, loggia. oh my

last night was fun as i hopped around which is the best thing in the world to do. in los angeles it's kinda difficult unless you're sticking to one particular location and can walk around a bit (hollywood strip, silverlake digs, cauhenga crawl). Or if you find a good designated driver. honestly, i'm ALL in favor of a rail system. but that's another picture to paint.

I started off the night at El Chavo with my new Real World pallies for the weekend. Since Monday is a holiday, I decided to travel and spend some time out of the city. I need to take a break to catch my breath and get some things in order in my life (why does that always involve tequila) so I'm traveling to Mexico for a few days. I'm staying in a house with 15 other people and it's going to be....insane. One BIG house on the beach complete with dirtbikes, kayaks, turntables, bonfires who knows what will go down. Another picture for later.

So I met up with some of the R.W. gang at El Chavo which is a cute little Mexican joint in Silverlake (Sunset and Virgil). The drinks were good, food a-plenty and the coolest guy was playing some sort of Mexican harp (pardon my ignorance!). I would go back for sure, it's a great spot that's not cheesy like Spanish Kitchen or El Cholo. I met a few friends next door at the Tiki Bar which is insanely cute. Not to be confused with the "Tiki Room" at DisneyLand. Very small and Tiki-themed everything. Go here!!!!

After this was Loggia which is a part of the Highlands. It's an amazing spot on the 5th Floor at Hollywood and Highland. It overlooks Hollywood Blvd and is generally a good place to go and kick it. Coming up the escalator I saw Danny Masterson with a few friends, he was wearing cool glasses and on his way out of the joint. We stayed at Loggia for a drink or two, which is generally all one can take before the crowd gets slightly mundane. That's all I've got!
